Description

Storm Type

Click the arrow and select a storm type from the dropdown list.

Description

Enter a descriptor name in the description box. The descriptor name can be up to 60 characters.

Load button

Click to load an existing storm file.

Save button

Click to save the storm profile.

Chicago Storm

Enter the parameters for the Chicago storm.

Option

Description

Mean Annual Precipitation

The annual rainfall in millimetres.

Return Period

The return period, or statistical frequency, of the storm event.

Storm Duration

The time elapsed from the start to finish of the storm event in minutes.

Time Step

The time increment, in minutes, used in the analysis of the storm and runoff model.

Ratio of Peak to Duration

The ratio of the time to the peak intensity vs. the storm duration. This value determines the placement of the storm peak relative to it's duration.

Region

The region where the storm event takes place. There are two options:

  • Inland

  • Coastal

IDF Parameters

The IDF parameters determine the total depth of rainfall. The values are calculated.

Reset button

Click to change the IDF coefficients back to the ones proposed by Watson (1981) for the Chicago storm simulation in Southern Africa.

IDF Curve button

Click to generate an intensity-duration-frequency curve.

Export button

Click to export the design storm intensity array to a SWMM Rainfall File, which can be imported in the SWMM Rain Gauge Editor. The Export SWMM Rainfall File options will be displayed.

Print button

Click to print the current window.

User Storm

Specify the parameters of the user defined storm. This will set up a blank array for you to input intensity values.

Option

Description

Storm Duration

The time elapsed from the start to finish of the storm event in minutes.

Time Step

The time increment in minutes used in the analysis of the storm and runoff model.

Export button

Click to export the design storm intensity array to a SWMM Rainfall File, which can be imported in the SWMM Rain Gauge Editor. The Export SWMM Rainfall File options will be displayed.

Triangular Storm

Specify the parameters of the triangular storm.

Option

Description

Total Depth of Rainfall

The total depth of rainfall, in mm, of this storm event. This value is used to calculate the intensity at each time step.

Storm Duration

The time elapsed from the start to finish of the storm event in minutes.

Time Step

The time increment in minutes used in the analysis of the storm and runoff model.

Ratio of Peak to Duration

The ratio of the time to the peak intensity vs. the storm duration. This value determines the placement of the storm peak relative to it's duration.
